Mitsuri is an unnaturally strong member of the demon slayer corps and is also known as “the Hashira of love” due to the fact, she uses a unique form of breathing known as love breathing.
Her motive for joining the demon slayer corps was one of the most unique reasons we’ve ever heard. She joined the corps because wanted to find a man who was stronger than her and then marry him.
She appears in several arcs of the manga/anime series but her strength and skill are truly displayed in the swordsmith village arc.
Appearance
Mitsuri is a beautiful young woman, that possesses unnatural strength for her size and stature. She is of average height, however quite muscular with green eyes and a pale white complexion.
At first glance, it is very evident that Mitsuri’s uniform is not the regular demon slayer outfit, but instead a heavily modified version of it. She also wears a Haori coat that was gifted to her by Kyojuro Rengoku.
Mitsuri’s Personality
Mitsuri is shown to have a very fun and jovial outlook on life. She is very sweet, compassionate, and caring to the ones around her as she is often seen complimenting others, which speaks true to the fact that she’s the “Hashira of love.”
Mitsui joined the demon slayer corps to find the perfect man for her, who was stronger than her so she could marry him.
To say she was desperate for marriage would be an understatement, as finding a groom for her marriage proved to be quite difficult because the only men who were stronger than her were her own Hashira brethren.
It’s pretty evident that Mitsuri’s personality is akin to a kid sometimes, we think the best depiction of this was when she was asked to explain how her demon slayer mark formed. Instead of explaining the answer normally, she made use of sounds and noises to illustrate the process.
Mitsuri’s Early Life
Mitsuri was born during the Meiji period and had five siblings, from an early age she displayed unnatural feats of strength that shouldn’t have been possible for a child. When she was 13 months old, barely older than a year, she had the muscular strength to lift a rock that weighed 15 KG.
As a kid, she used to eat way more than other kids her size, and the color of her hair turned into a bright shade of pink as she ate too many Sakura Mochi.
Due to her hair color and unnatural strength, the man she was supposed to marry when she was 17 rejected her.
After this rejection, she wanted to fit in better with the other girls so she decided to dye her hair black and also started to eat less to make herself appear weaker.
She met a potential man that she could marry when she changed her appearance but in the end that didn’t work out either. Mitsuri then encountered Kagaya Ubuyashiki, who told her that she shouldn’t try to confine herself within normalcy and should accept her strength as a gift.
It was after this encounter, that Mitsuri decided to join the demon slayer corps and quickly rose through the ranks to eventually become one of the Hashira. During her time in the demon slayer corps, she also decided to find a man who was stronger than her and marry him.
Mitsuri’s Demon Slayer Powers & Abilities
Unnatural Muscular Structure: Mitsuri possesses muscles that are almost eight times as dense as those of normal human beings, granting her freakish strength that far surpasses most of the demon slayers.
During her fight with the upper rank four Hantengu’s clone “Zohakuten”, her body was able to withstand a sound attack at point-blank range from him. However, to maintain her strength she has to eat three times the amount of food that a sumo wrestler consumes.
Demon Slayer Mark: During her fight with Hantengu’s clone, Zohakuten she was unconsciously able to draw out her demon slayer mark that took the shape of two hearts opposite to her close to her clavicle.
After this mark appeared, there was a significant increase in her overall strength, speed, stamina, and durability. The increase in her power was so dramatic that she was able to take on Zohakuten’s most vicious attacks with ease.
Extreme Flexibility: Not only is Mitsuri freakishly strong, but she also has the flexibility to use that strength with extreme efficiency. Her flexibility is also the reason she is the only one who can use her whip-like Nichirin sword.
The moves she performs using her love breathing technique require significant flexibility on the user’s part without which the blade might cut and stab the user.
Superhuman Speed & Reflexes: Despite her being the slowest runner within the Hashira, the speed of her attacks was said to be quicker than those of Tengen Uzui, who is the fastest runner out of all the Hashira.
The most prodigious display of her superhuman speed was when she was battling Zohakuten. During the fight, she was easily able to dodge sound and lightning attacks from Zohakuten’s blood demon art.
Superhuman Strength: Thanks to her dense muscles, Mitsuri was one of the strongest Hashira. During the battle with Hantengu, who’s the upper rank four, Mitsuri was the only one to remain standing after Genya, Nezuko, and Tanjiro were out of commission.
Later in the battle, despite suffering many injuries and being extremely tired she was able to tear off Muzan’s hand whip which shocked the demon king as he hadn’t expected her fatigued body to be capable of it.
What is the Love Breathing Technique?
Love breathing is a style of breathing that was developed by Mitsuri herself. When she was training with Kyojuro, he taught her the flame breathing technique.
However, she wasn’t able to master it or use it properly in a battle. So, she went on to develop a breathing technique that was more suited to her own fighting style. Here are some of the techniques that are used by Mitsuri:
First Form: Shivers of First Love This is the first technique in this breathing style where Mitsuri sprints forward while delivering a series of whip-like slashes on her opponent.
Second Form: Love Pangs This technique utilizes the length of her whip sword and delivers several arcing slashes from a distance.
Third Form: Catlove Shower In this form, Mitsuri leaps and delivers a barrage of ranged arcing slashes.
Fifth Form: Swaying Love, Wildclaw During this technique Mitsuri jumps back into the air and creates a series of long whip-like attacks.
Sixth Form: Cat-Legged Winds of Love In this technique, Mitsuri starts to spiral upside down while releasing numerous slashing attacks before the slashes retract and attack once again. All of this happens extremely quickly.
